Sri Sankara Arts and Science College was started in the year 2004, as an unaided college, affiliated to the Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirapalli. It was established on the outskirts of Kumbakonam at Asur village with a noble aim of providing quality education to the poorest of poor in our society by SKKSD Education & Health Trust, Chennai - 600 053.

A phenomenal growth has been achieved over the years. The college is to impart and promote among the youth the highest and the loftiest ideals which constitute the essence of our Culture, the quality of life of the students, inculcate them in a sense of discipline, a passion for straight dealings and character besides equipping them to confidently face the modern world through job-oriented courses of study like Computer Science, Bio Chemistry, Commerce and Business Administration.

The Government of Tamil Nadu had accorded permission for the college through G.O. No. 486 dated 9th September, 2004. Two more courses B.C.A. in 2008 - 09 and B.A. English Literature in 2009 - 10 were the added attraction to the already existing courses.

To help the rural students in getting good jobs, the basic course B.Sc., (Mathematics) was also introduced in the year 2010 - 2011. Two more post graduate courses viz., M.A.(English) and M.Com were started during 2014 - 15 and B.Sc. (Physics) was introduced in the year 2016-17.
